Why cool the whole storage room?

If you don't exactly store your wine treasures in an underground brick cellar, the vexed question of air conditioning arises. Because factor number 1 in the storage and aging of high-quality wines is still the temperature and its stability. Classic air conditioning systems always bring unwanted fluctuations due to their reactive cooling of the entire room. Storing the noble drops exclusively in wine refrigerators is not really an option, especially for larger stocks. For us it was clear: there must be another solution.

For which rooms is SmartActiveVentilation suitable?

Rooms without active air conditioning

The integrated heat exchangers provide cooling or heating of the air to the desired temperature level.

Either our own air conditioning units, for which a supply and exhaust air are required, an already existing building air conditioning system or a so-called chiller from any manufacturer provide the cooling source.

Redundant (fail-safe) design of the cooling system is also possible.

Rooms with active air conditioning

Wine cellars with recirculating air cooling already installed also benefit significantly from the use of the SmartActiveVentilation system.

The cold generated by the convection cooling first sinks to the floor, where it is drawn in and passed over the wines. This equalizes the sometimes extreme air temperature differences of up to 5°C between floor and ceiling for the wine. If the thermostat of the existing cooling system is also brought close to the floor, significant energy savings can also be possible.

It is also possible to mix both methods.

For example, while the recirculating air cooling ensures the basic temperature stability of the room (e.g. to 20°C), the additional cooling of the system ensures precise cooling of the air to the target temperature.


The circuit

For a direct and on-demand distribution of cold to the stored wine bottles. 

1. supply air from the floor

The room air is drawn in through the baseboard at the coldest point - the floor. A heat exchanger receives just enough cold energy so that the supply air has then reached the target temperature.

2. air flow upwards

Fans direct the air vertically upwards and over all the bottles. The intensity of the air flow depends on the temperature values measured on the trays.

3. air falls down

The cooled air, after passing over the bottles, falls out of the front of the furniture and flows thermodynamically downwards.

In the front plinth panel, the cooled, descended air is drawn back in and passed through the heat exchanger.

Bearing temperature stability

Storing bottles are directly overflowed with air at target temperature. The forward air acts as a protective air cushion against harmful temperature fluctuations.

Less energy loss

The previously cooled air falls towards the floor of the room at the front of the storage system. Here it is drawn in again, brought to the target temperature and sent back into the circuit.

Pleasant indoor climate

We cool the bottles - not the room. Thus, each zone gets its preferred climate - the wines feel comfortable and your wine tasting will not be a chilly affair.

The disadvantages of the air conditioner only

If you rely solely on the air conditioning in the wine cellar, a complete failure is certainly the worst case scenario. But even everyday activities such as opening the door, people entering the room and bringing heat with them, or even new wine crates moving in, quickly raise the room temperature by a few degrees. 

And then there is the technology. Measurements with the Sensorbottle have shown that even special units bring relatively high fluctuations in the temperature produced. Many air conditioners bring the cold air into the room in batches until the target temperature is reached and then pause until the upper temperature limit is reached. This quickly creates fluctuations of 1-2°C. In addition, the temperature of the individual layers of air in the room can vary by up to 2°C. Just think: A wine, for example, which is permanently exposed to fluctuations of 1°C, absorbs 1.3kWh of thermal power within one year at a fluctuation time of 4h. This could be used to boil 10 liters of water.
